Gambling harm is complicated
understanding our diversity of experiences
Gambling harm can happen to anyone, but the experience is not universal and some communities are at greater risk than others.
This Gambling Harm Awareness Week online event will focus on the highlights of studies conducted by Foundation-funded researchers into experiences of gambling harm among select groups in Victoria’s diverse communities. A Q&A session will follow.

Dr Aino Suomi, Institute of Child Protection Studies, Australian Catholic University, has developed a framework for engaging with people experiencing both mental ill-health and gambling harm, as described in her report, Lived experience of help-seeking in the presence of gambling related harms and coexisting mental health conditions.
Dr Andrea Waling, La Trobe University, with Associate Professor Nicki Dowling, Deakin University, studied the relationship between LGBTIQ+ status and gambling behaviour, and how LGBTIQ+ people characterise their engagement with gambling. Their research report is called Examining risk and protective factors for the development of gambling-related harms and problems in Victorian LGBTIQ+ communities.
Dr Hannah Pitt, Deakin University, conducted interviews and focus groups with people living with intellectual disability to better understand their experiences of gambling harm. She will share the findings, which are included in her report, People with intellectual disability and their lived experiences of gambling.
