From TikTok to Pegasus: Communicating cyber to the masses
Paul Haskell-Dowland is a Professor and Associate Dean (Computing and Security) in the School of Science. He is also the most widely read ECU author in The Conversation, achieving more than 3 million unique article views to date, and is one of the top fifty authors of all time in the Australia/New Zealand region.
Yet the value of this activity goes beyond direct readership – it has resulted in wider media engagement of more than 120 media interviews in the last two years alone.
Professor Haskell-Dowland’s challenge, however, is that cyber security is an area of computing shrouded in mystery for most people. Their exposure to, and understanding of, cyber security is often limited to notifications of a problem on their computer (phishing emails and viruses); awareness raising campaigns (often relying on threats of danger); or, through the lens of the media.
Cyber security has certainly become a hot topic in recent years with major incidents engaging the public interest. Although headlines and stories capture the imagination, the detail of the underlying technologies is often overlooked.
Join Professor Haskell-Dowland on a journey of communicating complex topics in a relatable way that everyone can understand. In this lecture, learn how to:
- effectively communicate scientific concepts to anyone;
- leverage the media to maximise the reach of your research; and
- recognise the value of non-traditional research dissemination methods.
Universities and researchers have a social responsibility to share our research and knowledge with the public – this can be scary but ultimately, rewarding.
