Reedy River - the Bush Musical Play as Warm as a Handshake
Dick Diamond’s Reedy River, set in the aftermath of the Australian national strike of the 1890s, focusses on the shearers’ battle for better conditions and pay, a battle that still resonates in our lives. The shearers’ strike has been broken, the leaders gaoled and the sheds are in disarray as non-union labour is brought in alongside unionised workers. Joe, one of the gaoled strike leaders, returns to Reedy River and his estranged wife Mary. Many of his old colleagues are shearing there, attempting to re-establish a union presence in the sheds. Joe, a strike hero, is offered the non-union job of Shed Boss. The future of the union, old mateships and his marriage hangs in the balance. Rich with bush music and songs, Reedy River is a rollicking and inspiring story of mateship, courage and humour – and a love as sturdy as its characters.Cost: From $37 pp
