Therry Theatre's The Pitmen Painters
This true story is centred around five miners in Northern England in the 1930s attempting to better themselves by taking weekly education classes at their local Workers’ Educational Association. Last term: Evolution. This term: Art Appreciation. However, when their middle-class teacher, Robert Lyon, discovers that they have never actually seen any real art before, he realises that a traditional approach simply won’t work.
The play had sell-out seasons at Newcastle’s (UK) Live Theatre and The Royal National Theatre and won the 2008 Evening Standard Award for Best Play. And now Therry has brought this gem of a show to Adelaide - directed by Geoff Brittain
Location
The Arts Theatre, 53 Angas Street, Adelaide, 5000.
