PLEIN AIR DRAWING with Andy Dolphin
Drawing is the foundation of visual art and it can be easier than you think.
Join award-winning artist Andy Dolphin for this half-day workshop covering the basics of sketching en plein air. Topics covered include simplifying the landscape, handling perspective and finding successful compositions through tonal thumbnails.
Andy will also introduce students to a simple sketching method he calls Mindful Contour Drawing which he uses for urban sketching or to produce preliminary drawings for watercolour painting.
While the lesson is aimed primarily at painters, the methods used will also suit artists simply wanting an introduction to plein air drawing.
Please note: This Masterclass is for artists registered to paint at Plein Air Down Under - if you haven’t registered to paint, please register here: Plein Air Down Under
About Andy Dolphin
With a background in sign writing, graphic art and commercial illustration dating back almost 40 years, Andy Dolphin brings a solid foundation in design and attention to detail to his fine art pursuits.
Since 2000, Andy has worked mainly in oils, focussing on his love of the Western Australian outdoors. His subjects range from rural landscapes to forests and seascapes but the one thing that brings them all together is sunlight.
While some works are painted in the studio, Andy especially loves to take his French box easel out into the field where he can paint “en plein air” and capture a scene straight from nature.
More recently, Andy turned his attention to watercolour and won second prize in the Watercolour Society of WA 2022 plein air event in Fremantle. He finds street scenes particularly interesting in this medium and often paints in the rain from the comfort of his car.
Andy is a two-time award winner at Plein Air Down Under and, with an increasing list of art awards to his name, Andy continues to enjoy consistent sales. Works are now held by local and interstate customers as well as buyers from the UK, USA and Asia.
In 2020, Andy was selected as WA Regional Artist of the Month and is a popular choice for drawing classes and painting workshops.
