About
Please join us in hearing award-winning scientist and historian (and Adelaide Hills local) Danielle Clode for our next online Meet the Author evening. Danielle will be launching her latest book, In Search of the Woman Who Sailed the World, on Wednesday October 14 at 7pm via Zoom, and chatting to Matilda Bookshop's Molly Murn. We hope that you can join us for what promises to be a fascinating discussion on sailing, history, biography and autobigraphy, and writing women's stories.
In Search of the Woman Who Sailed the World sets out to discover the story of Jeanne Barret - the first woman to sail the world - by following in her footsteps.Like Helen MacDonald or Edmund de Waal, this is a story that begins in childhood. Danielle Clode grew up on her parents’ boat, reading tales of swashbuckling derring-do, of pirates, whalers and shipwrecks. Increasingly she began to ask, why couldn’t she see herself in all of these tales? Where were all the women? Now, years later, Danielle reflects on a life at sea via her quest to find the first woman to circumnavigate the globe in 1766, Frenchwoman Jeanne Barret. In a stunning braid of natural history, memoir and biography, Clode reclaims the life of this lost female pioneer from the male voices that have effectively written her out of history.
Danielle Clode is a zoologist and award-winning author. She has worked as a zookeeper and scientific interpreter, in exhibition design and academia, and spent many years as a technical editor and writing teacher. She has written several books, including Voyages to the South Seas, which won the 2007 Victorian Premier's Literary Award for Nonfiction. In 2019 Clode was a finalist for The Biography Award. She is also a firm friend of Matilda Bookshop.
