TRANSITION BONDI - Inner Transition MAY 2021
ABOUT THE EVENT
'Writing as an inner journey' - An evening with author of Blue Wave Bondi Robyn Edwards
'Writing my first novel took me on an inner journey where I was able to explore many themes which are important to me - love of ocean, home, belonging, social justice and equality', said Robyn Edwards, local Bondi writer.
Come and join a discussion about how writing, blogs, journals and literature can reflect and portray our world and big issues such as climate change and environmental activism, and how books can imagine a future where humans no longer dominate and exploit our natural world.
About Author Robyn Edwards
Bondi Beach local, Robyn Edwards, lives to face the breaking waves each day. In her debut novel, ‘Blue Wave Bondi’, recently published by Sydney School of Arts & Humanities (SSOA), she plunges into deep waters to write a story of love to the ocean, the people living on its edge and our shared futures. Evoking the life-blood and pulse of Sydney’s iconic Bondi and the people who call it home, it’s a lyrical and memorable work of contemporary fiction.
As an advocate for social justice and equality all her long working life, Robyn has written a novel with lots of heart, reflected in the young activists Anu and Jai. The social crime of homelessness, belonging to community and friendship with First Nations people are themes woven into the narrative.
Robyn’s writing journey started in the 1970s with a love of language and Dorothy Porter’s evening classes at Sydney’s old Darlinghurst Gaol, now reformed as the National Art School. ‘Dorothy had just published her first book of poems, Little Hoodlums, and I was identifying with that tag!’ Decades later, while completing her Masters in Peace and Conflict Studies at Sydney University,
Robyn saw the links between peace activism and poetry and signed up for the poet Judith Beveridge’s literature course.
2018 was Robyn’s ‘Year of the Novel’. She took a break from paid work, immersed herself in writing and wrote every day, finishing the MS at the end of 2019. ‘I wanted to write about the ocean, which I’ve always loved and Bondi Beach, where I’ve lived for most of my adult life, since riding across the Harbour Bridge on my Kawasaki motor bike in the 1970s to live in share houses in Bondi.’
While Robyn destroyed many drafts during her writing adventure, attending regular weekly sessions with other writers and engaging a writing mentor provided invaluable feedback on new chapters and encouraged her to continue. She is now writing a sequel, another novel set in Bondi, but this time during the time of the virus lockdown. Stay tuned!

Transition Bondi’s Inner Transition events are held in a private venue, in an informal atmosphere. The aim currently is to trial a range of ‘contemplative’ mini-workshops, led by different people, to see what draws the local community together in a spirit of fun and connection.
Transition Bondi is an initiative of Transition Sydney.
