Heal Country with Cara Cross
Cara Cross is a Worimi Biripi woman, with family connections to the Gringai and Yuin nations who will discuss during our yarning session what last year’s NAIDOC theme, ‘Heal Country’ means to her. Descended from a long line of traditional Aboriginal healers, Cara is an Aboriginal historian, researcher and is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Newcastle’s Purai Global Indigenous History Centre. In 2019, Cara was awarded the Ikara-Flinders Ranges Challenge Ph.D. Indigenous Scholarship, which is awarded to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Ph.D students whose research contributes to the broader community, demonstrating its potential impact on society. In 2020, Cara was awarded a Recognition of Achievement by UON and The Wollotuka Institute for her publication, Our Country, Our Healer: Aboriginal Apothecaries of Burning Mountain which is expected to be published in ANU Press’ Aboriginal History Journal 2021.
