ADFAS Brisbane: Australian Women Artists 1880-1980
Institutional hurdles or societal values?
The earliest professional female artists in Australia were employees of editorials such as The Bulletin and Home Magazine until the rise of Modern Art saw the mass exodus of prospective female artists who sought training in Europe in the early 20th century. This lecture will track their experiences and triumphant return as pioneers of Australian Modernism. Then it will move on to look at Post War and Mid Century Artists, the Heide Circle, the Sydney Charm School and, our Indigenous female artists.
