What is a 'good' age for a participant? Some information to help you decide:
A student pilot is not permitted (by law) to fly *solo* until they attain the age of 15; there is usually no point commencing private flight training before age 14, with an instructor, leading up to solo flight on or after a 15th birthday. Some pilots younger than 12 may have difficulty physically reaching the aircraft controls and seeing over the top of the dash (dependent on personal physical development), so they could get very little benefit from a flying experience, other than as an 'expensive passenger'. This is a *generalisation*, of course.
The program covers aviation considerations over and above flying the aircraft; including basic aerodynamics and physics, and some additional aviation theory. Our experience is that students younger than 12-14 can find it hard to concentrate for the required period of time and sometimes have difficulty grasping some of the concepts, and may become bored or distracted. In the past, some have become disruptive to older participants - we recognise that there is a world of difference between individuals and there is an amazing variation between aspiring pilots between the ages of 12-17, so it is very much a case-by-case thing.
As an example, having 10-12-year-olds in the same learning group as 17-year-olds, younger participants can find it challenging to participate equally and it becomes somewhat of an instructional challenge, to be able to engage participants equally, without the whole group being challenged. Where we have a cohort of 'same age' participants, we try to work with them together, and potentially schedule an older or younger group at a different time.
