Artists are invited to submit entries for the annual Shinju Matsuri Art Awards exhibition, part of the Shinju Matsuri event schedule. The Shinju Matsuri Art Awards are open to Broome residents and will be held in the Broome Civic Centre from Monday 26th August to Sunday 1st September 2024.
There is no set theme for the Art Awards. Shinju Matsuri and the love of the Kimberley, along with celebration of the people, culture and history of Broome can be drawn on for inspiration. This is a community festival and art must be suitable for public viewing. Presented works that are deemed to cause offence may not be accepted by Shinju Matsuri Inc.

WORK ELIGIBLE FOR ENTRY
Artists can enter one work per category. If more than one work is entered, the artist needs to select which work they wish to be in competition for the overall Shire of Broome Acquisitive prize.
Entries must be received before the closing date (see key dates).
All entries must be original, completed in the 12 months since the last Shinju Matsuri festival, and not entered in previous Shinju Matsuri Art Awards.
All works must be received with name and contact details of the entrant attached to the work
JUDGING PANEL
The judging panel, composed of respected industry professionals, will evaluate artworks on-site based on the following criteria:
-Interpretation and clarity of the theme to the viewer.
-Creativity and originality of the depicted theme.
-Quality of artistic composition and overall design aligned with the theme.
-Quality presentation and compliance within the entered category.
-Overall impression of the art.
Judges will independently assess each artwork and provide summary feedback to artists, fostering professional development opportunities and elevating program professionalism.
ARTISTS EXHIBIT AT THEIR OWN RISK
The exhibition does not have an accidental and malicious damage insurance policy to cover the work. All care is taken with the works; however, Shinju Matsuri Inc is not responsible for damage or loss. All risk in the exhibition of work remains with the artist at all times, irrespective of whether the work is being handled by a member of exhibition staff. By signing the entry form artists authorise the exhibition staff to move their work or remove from the building for any reason, including by not limited to public safety, damage or potential damage to the work or for the cohesive curation of the exhibition.
IMPORTANT TERMS & CONDITIONS
2D works limited to maximum dimensions (including frame) of 180cm x 120cm.
3D works limited to maximum dimensions of width 150cm x 150cm.
There are no height restrictions, but all works must be able to be installed without the use of mechanical assistance.
All works must arrive at the building on Sunday 25th August, 2024 between 9am - 2pm and must be picked up on either Sunday 1st September between 2pm-4pm or Monday 2nd September between 9am - 12pm. If you cannot make these times, please contact the organisers.
Works may not be removed from the exhibition until the end of the advertised exhibition period.
Artists should take their packing materials with them and bring packing materials when picking up the works. No responsibility taken by the organisers for packing material.
All entries are to arrive free of freight costs and return the same way. Shinju Matsuri Inc. is not responsible for any delivery or return freight charges.
Each entry must be clearly marked with completed details attached to the back of the artwork.
Shinju Matsuri Inc reserves the right to not accept any entry it deems to be inappropriate for display.
In the event of a dispute regarding the interpretation of conditions, the decision of Shinju Matsuri Inc. and the judging panel is final.
If the winning entry of the Shire of Broome Acquisitive Art Prize is valued in excess of the prize amount $8,000, the artists shall accept the prize money only.
Code of Conduct Clause; All entrants are to behave in a respectful way towards other entrants, the public, staff, volunteers, staff and Shinju Matsuri Inc. (i.e. no defamatory comments publicly). A breach of the code of conduct will result in the entrant’s work being disqualified. If breached after receiving prizes or winning, entrants will be required to reimburse Shinju Matsuri Inc any prize or prize money.
