The CI Melbourne Jam Guidelines (below) form our Code of Conduct. If any participants are not complying with this, they may be asked to leave.
CI Melbourne Jam Guidelines (v2):
Arriving and entering the space
- The CI Melbourne jams are open to all levels of experience.
- Beginners are encouraged to attend classes to increase their understanding of CI fundamentals.
- Be timely with your arrival, take the time to warm up your body in the way you need, familiarise yourself with the space and people in it.
Dancefloor etiquette
- Remove all jewellery; wear clothes that offer a lot of skin coverage (long pants and tops) to avoid discomfort or injury when using sliding and rolling point in CI. It is preferable not to wear lycra or activewear which can be slippery.
- We keep our dance floor clean and ask that you keep your feet clean and leave shoes outside.
- Exercise basic hygiene by wearing clean clothes and changing tops during the jam if necessary.
- Keep the floor open for dancing, and keep chatting and resting away from the dancefloor.
- The jam is a place of personal practice and learning. Respect your partner’s right to self discovery and resist the urge to teach or coach unless requested. Let the dance be your teacher.
Physical safety and self responsibility
- By taking part in the jam you acknowledge that CI is inherently risky and agree to take responsibility for your own safety.
- Know the limits of your skill and dance within them.
- Be aware of what is happening around you, be aware of other dancers in the space.
- Do not allow your partner to push you beyond your limits; you don’t have to “keep up”
- If you are a newcomer or beginner, try to focus on weight sensing, a shared centre and the rolling point of contact rather than what the movement might look like from the outside.
- If dancing with a newcomer, affirm the CI principles of shared centre, rolling point, listening, weight sensing and pathways to the floor. These principles are significantly safer and more useful than ‘going for basing / flying’.
Saying ‘no’
- It’s OK to say “no” at any time, physically or verbally, without having to explain. It’s also OK to hear or receive a “no”.
- Grabbing your partner at any time can be dangerous, particularly their “landing gear” (arms and legs). Allow your partner to take care of themselves and to move with freedom & autonomy in the dance.
- Sexual advances and sexual touch are not acceptable. Please see the Community Statement on sexual harassment.
- If you are uncomfortable with anything at the Jam, please stop dancing and speak to your partner, the jam Monitor or a jam regular.
Deepening Your Practice
- Take classes to increase your skill level, move with more confidence and stay safe – check out the Contact Improvisation Melbourne facebook page.
- Witnessing is a great way to learn. Active watching supports and feeds the dancing.
