BEAT THE HEAT CURRY COOK OFF 2026 — TERMS AND CONDITIONS

By nominating a team for the Curry Cook Off, all team members agree to be bound by the following Terms and Conditions.
TEAM
1. Teams must consist of a minimum two people, maximum three people and remain the same for the entirety of the competition.
2. Each team is to submit an official team name.
3. Teams must be nominated before the event to participate. Applications will not be accepted on the day of the event. Applications close on Tuesday 1st September 2026 at 11:59pm.
4. All entrants must be over the age of 18 years.
5. Officers and immediate family of Cloncurry Shire Council are eligible to participate.
SETUP
1. Bump-in will commence at 1:30pm for teams to set up their cooking stations.
2. Two tables will be provided for each cooking station.
3. Teams will have access to 2 x 10-amp power outlets.
4. Teams will have access to potable water. No site facilities can be used without prior consent from officials. We recommend you bring an Esky for any cold items.
5. Teams must provide cooking apparatus, utensils and all cooking ingredients.
6. Teams will receive a $300 Cloncurry Buy Local gift card to purchase fresh produce, which is to be collected prior to the event.
7. Teams must adhere to electrical, fire, and food safety codes, and any rules set by officials.
COOKING
1. Teams must cook their curry at the location of the event. Only preparation work, such as cutting vegetables and meat, may be done prior to the event. No browning, cooking, smoking, braising or broiling of meat prior to the event.
2. Teams may begin cooking no earlier than 3:00pm.
3. Teams may enter any type of curry.
4. Teams must prepare to cook at least 3kg of curry.
5. Teams are required to cook rice to be served with the curry and may provide other condiments to enhance it.
SERVING
1. Teams are to plate and serve three small dishes for the judges, ready at 7:00pm. All condiments are to be served on the side, and judges will add them if they wish to.
2. Teams are to serve a sample size of curry to the public.
3. Teams are to serve a minimum of 100 sample serves.
4. Sample bowls and spoons will be provided by Council.
JUDGING
1. Judging will commence at 7:00pm on the main stage.
2. The judges will determine first place and a runner-up on the taste of the curry, plating and theme of the cooking station.
3. People’s Choice Award is determined by the public. Cloncurry Shire Council will organise an online public voting system accessible via QR code.
4. Officials and judges reserve the right to disqualify teams for inappropriate behaviour or foul tactics.
5. In the event of any dispute not covered by the above rules, the decision of officials is final.
SAFETY
1. Council will conduct a documented risk assessment for the event, and trained first aid officers will be on site for the duration of the event.
2. Teams cook with heat elements, gas and hot liquids. Teams are responsible for the safe operation of their cooking station and must comply with all electrical, fire and food safety requirements and any reasonable direction of officials.
3. Curries served to the public and judges may be hot in both temperature and spice and may contain allergens. Teams must be able to advise officials and the public of major allergens in their dish on request. Members of the public eat at their own discretion.
4. The event will proceed in most weather; however, in the case of extreme heat, storms or other unsafe conditions, officials may delay, modify or cancel the event. Where the event proceeds in hot conditions, water will be available and participants are encouraged to wear sun protection and stay hydrated. Officials may stop any participant showing signs of heat stress.
5. Participation is voluntary. Participants must follow all reasonable directions of event officials at all times.
PRIZES
1. First place: a $2500 prize, a first-place trophy, and the team’s name engraved on the perpetual trophy located in Council’s Admin Office.
2. Runner-up: a $1000 prize.
3. Third place: a $500 prize.
4. People’s Choice: a $500 prize.
5. Prizes cannot be transferred, substituted, amended, exchanged or redeemed for cash.
WAIVER
By nominating a Curry Cook Off team, I acknowledge and agree to the following:
1. I release and discharge Cloncurry Shire Council, event officials and volunteers from all liability for personal injury, property damage or any other loss arising from my participation in the Curry Cook Off, to the extent permitted by law. Further, I indemnify event officials from all claims or actions that may be brought against them in connection with my participation in this event, to the extent permitted by law.
2. I agree to abide by the official rules and any reasonable directions given to me by event officials. I understand that event officials may disqualify my team for any reason should they see fit.
3. I understand that competing in the Curry Cook Off involves my team cooking a curry that meets food safety requirements and that my team is responsible for the safe operation of our cooking station.
4. I understand that competing in the Curry Cook Off requires cooking with heat elements. In my judgement, I am physically fit to participate. I consent to receiving medical treatment from appropriately qualified personnel in the event I suffer an injury during the event.
5. I understand that during the Curry Cook Off, I may be photographed or filmed. I agree to allow my photograph or video to be used for legitimate purposes by Cloncurry Shire Council, which may include promotional material, news stories and social media.
6. I agree to use all reasonable endeavours to ensure that my team and I compete in the event in the spirit of the Curry Cook Off.
