BEAT THE HEAT MINE CART RALLY 2026 — TERMS AND CONDITIONS

By nominating a team for the Mine Cart Rally, all team members agree to be bound by the following Terms and Conditions.
TEAM
1. Two people make up a team. One driver and one rider.
2. The rider is to be dressed as a cowboy — a wide-brim hat, jeans, and a long-sleeve shirt.
3. The driver is to be dressed as a miner — hi-vis shirt and hard hat.
4. Teams can nominate on the day of the event; there will be a maximum of 10 team entries. Once this allocation is exhausted, nominations will be closed.
5. Team members are to remain the same for all heats.
6. Participants must be 18 years or over to participate.
7. Current sitting Councillors, any Council employees or individuals directly involved in the administration or handling of the Competition, and appointed members of the official Judging Panel are strictly ineligible to win any financial prizes.
MINE CART SPECIFICATIONS
1. Participants are responsible for constructing their mine cart to the specifications listed below, unless they are using a standard mine cart supplied by Council (teams who use the Council mine cart will not be eligible for ‘Most Enthusiastic’).
2. The cart must have fully enclosed sides. Wall height from the inside base must be a minimum of 70cm.
3. The cart may be built of any solid material and must be structurally sound to ensure it does not fall apart during the race.
4. No sharp objects or protruding pieces are to be included in or on the outside of the cart.
5. The cart must include four wheels, with the wheel diameter not to exceed 25cm.
6. Each cart should have a theme and display the name of the team clearly written on each side.
RACE RULES
1. Participants will need to present their cart for inspection at 6.15pm beside the main stage. Officials may refuse entry to, or require modification of, any cart that does not meet specifications or that they consider unsafe.
2. The race will start with both driver and rider at the start line in front of the main stage.
3. The course will be walked through with competitors prior to the race commencing. The course may include, but is not limited to, pushing the mine cart, eating hot curry, heavy lifting, and cracking a whip.
4. Carts are to be pushed at a controlled, safe speed at all times; riding an unbraked cart down any slope is not permitted.
5. Teams will compete two at a time and complete the same obstacles.
6. Each team will be timed, and the two fastest teams will race off in the final.
7. Officials will monitor the race to ensure each section of the course is completed. If a section is not completed, the team will be stopped and asked to complete it before moving to the next section.
8. Officials and judges reserve the right to stop or disqualify any team on safety grounds, or for inappropriate behaviour or foul tactics.
9. In the event of any dispute not covered by the above rules, the decision of officials is final.
SAFETY
1. Council will conduct a documented risk assessment for the event, and trained first aid officers will be on site for the duration of the race.
2. The course includes eating hot curry. The curry may be hot in both temperature and spice and may contain allergens. Participants eat at their own discretion and should advise officials of any allergies before competing. Participants are not required to consume any quantity that is unsafe for them.
3. The event will proceed in most weather; however, in the case of extreme heat, storms or other unsafe conditions, officials may delay, modify or cancel the event. Where the event proceeds in hot conditions, water will be available and participants are encouraged to wear sun protection and stay hydrated. Officials may stop any participant showing signs of heat stress.
4. Participation is voluntary. Participants must follow all reasonable directions of event officials at all times.
PRIZES
1. First place: a $300 Buy Local voucher, a first-place trophy, and the team’s name engraved on the perpetual trophy located in Council’s Admin Office.
2. Second place: a $200 Buy Local voucher and a runner-up trophy.
3. Most Enthusiastic: a $100 Buy Local voucher.
4. Prizes cannot be transferred, substituted, amended, exchanged or redeemed for cash.
WAIVER
By nominating a Mine Cart Rally team, I acknowledge and agree to the following:
1. I release and discharge Cloncurry Shire Council, event officials and volunteers from all liability for personal injury, property damage or any other loss arising from my participation in the Mine Cart Rally, to the extent permitted by law. Further, I indemnify event officials from all claims or actions that may be brought against them in connection with my participation in this event, to the extent permitted by law.
2. I agree to abide by the official race rules and any reasonable directions given to me by event officials. I understand that event officials may disqualify me, my team or my mine cart for any reason should they see fit.
3. I understand that competing in the Mine Cart Rally requires running, pushing and general physical activity. In my judgement, I am physically fit to participate. I consent to receiving medical treatment from appropriately qualified personnel in the event I suffer an injury during the event.
4. I understand that during the Mine Cart Rally I may be photographed or filmed. I agree to allow my photograph or video to be used for legitimate purposes by Cloncurry Shire Council, which may include promotional material, news stories and social media.
5. I agree to use all reasonable endeavours to ensure that my team and I compete in the event in the spirit of the Mine Cart Rally.
