INTRODUCTION TO VOICEOVER
A practical workshop for absolute beginners
Have you ever wondered whether you could do voiceover—but had no idea how to begin?
This friendly, hands-on Canberra workshop gives complete beginners the chance to explore voiceover properly: learning how it works, trying different kinds of scripts, receiving supportive direction and discovering practical ways to build their skills.
You do not need acting experience, recording equipment or a conventionally “perfect” voice. Bring your curiosity and willingness to have a go.
WHAT WE’LL DO
We’ll explore different types of voiceover, including:
• commercials and promotional reads
• audiobooks and narration
• documentary and educational content
• corporate and e-learning material
• animation, character voices and video games
• film, video and other creative projects
There will be plenty of practical exercises. You’ll work with short scripts, make different performance choices, receive individual feedback and try the material again with direction.
We’ll also cover:
• simple vocal and physical warm-ups
• interpreting scripts and identifying the intended listener
• microphone technique and basic recording setup
• what makes a useful recording space
• simple editing and exporting
• ways to practise and gain experience
• training, voluntary projects and casting platforms
• when you may be ready for a professional demo
• auditions, production companies, voice rosters and agents
• realistic next steps for continuing after the workshop
WHAT YOU’LL LEAVE WITH
By the end of the workshop, you will have:
• tried several different styles of voiceover
• received supportive, practical feedback on your delivery
• learned the basics of recording yourself
• gained a clearer understanding of the voiceover industry
• identified sensible next steps for your own interests and goals
• a printed beginner’s guide and USB resource pack to help you continue
This is an introduction—not a promise of instant paid work or a finished professional demo. It is a welcoming place to try voiceover, ask questions and find out whether you would like to take it further.
ABOUT YOUR FACILITATOR
Jay Piza is a Canberra-based voice artist, audiobook narrator and creative-workshop facilitator. She has completed voice and voiceover training through NIDA Open, recorded professionally produced commercial and narration demos, performed voice roles for independent screen projects and delivered successful introductory audiobook-narration workshops.
