Private Studio Session (Members Only)

Between Sunday 5 May 2024 and Sunday 30 June 2024
Private Studio Sessions are only for approved members who have completed required paperwork. Please always check the shared calendar before you book into a session. Clay is available for purchase at $10/kilo (including two firings and glazing). Please see the Studio Manager to purchase clay. A storage space for your clay will be provided. If you are proving your own clay and glazes, please discuss this with the Studio Manager prior to firing. Procedures apply for potters booking private studio sessions. Work must be named and stored correctly. Wheels, tables, tools and the floor must be left as clean as they were found. IMPORTANT: Please ensure all doors are locked, gates closed, and lights and air-con are switched off prior to leaving the studio if you are the last person there.

Monthly Clay and Sip!

Join us for a casual and fun evening of hand building with clay. In this two hour session, you can enjoy your beverage of choice while you hand build with our beautiful clay. Our experienced pottery teacher will provide guidance to build a mug, pot, bowl, or other vessel of your choice. Cute and creative examples will be provided for inspiration! But as always, you are more than welcome to BYO inspo and create whatever your heart desires. "Underglaze" is available for you to decorate your vessel with colour during the session. All work will be clear glazed and fired by the studio and available for collection after approximately 4 weeks. We encourage handwashing your pieces. Only food-safe glazes are used. Suitable for people aged 13 and over. Directed at beginners but all skill levels are welcome. BYO drinks if desired. Tea/coffee available at the studio.

Studio Time - Self Directed

Studio Time is a casual self directed and self paced opportunity to create among a group of other clay-lovers. There are indoor and outdoor work spaces, four pottery wheels, equipment and tools. Clay is available for purchase at $10/kilo (including two firings and glazing). Just bring along your creativity and an apron if you plan on getting muddy! Suitable for persons aged 15 and over.

5 Week All Abilities Pottery Wheel Course - (From May 22)

This is a five week course that caters to beginners or potters with some introductory experience wanting to improve their abilities. The focus is on making functional vessels on the pottery wheel. Use of the studio tools, wheels, clay, firing and glazes all included. At the end of the course, you should expect to have produced around 6 to 8 food-safe and dishwasher-safe pieces of functional ceramics. Each student has a wheel for their exclusive use during throwing classes. The class meets every Wednesday from 6pm to 8:30pm, from May 22 to June 19. Students will be part of a community studio and participate in tidying their tools and space at the end of class. Suitable for persons aged 16 and over. Course cancellations require one week notice. Make-up sessions cannot be provided for missed classes (students may join public studio time classes at their own cost). This course is taught by Karen McDonald.

Introduction to Hand Building - June

Join Sensei Sam for an introduction to hand building using the coiling method. Trained in Japan, Sam will guide you to create a pot, bowl, vase or other vessel of your choice in this two hour session. Underglaze is available for you to decorate your vessel with colour during the session (with the option available for the studio to dip in one of our selected glazes). All work will be clear glazed and fired by the studio and available for collection after approximately 4 weeks. Only food safe glazes are used. We recommend hand washing your creations. Pottery Apprentice Program (8 Week Course)

The Pottery Apprentice Program is an intensive 8 week pottery course where teen potters will develop their personal style and express creative ideas. Students make, glaze and fire a number of functional and sculptural pieces. Techniques will be demonstrated, but there is plenty of scope for individual artistic expression. Specifically, the curriculum includes: • Throwing and trimming pots on a pottery wheel • Hand building with coils, pinch pots and slab • Sculpture • Exploring glaze mediums • Studio safety and maintenance Classes run weekly from Apr 26 - Jun 14 (8 weeks) between 3.30 - 5.30pm. The last 10 minutes of class are focused on cleaning our tools and equipment. Make-up lessons are not available. Please read terms prior to booking. Suitable for ages 12 to 20. This course is run by Denya Hunt. Denya is a Diploma of Arts student with her own pottery business specialising in colourful and quirky ceramics. She has been leading classes at Santai Studio since 2022.

Mini Potters (8 Week Course)

Tuesday 23 April 2024
The Mini Potters Program is an 8 week course for 8-12 year olds, where we explore each child’s artistic expression. This course is designed to promote mindfulness, mental health and confidence in a safe and welcoming space. Students learn and practice a range of technical pottery skills. Kids can expect to make a range of artworks including, but not limited to, cups, mugs, bowls, vases, sculptures, and anything their imagination can create. Techniques will be demonstrated, but there is plenty of scope for individual ideas. Classes run weekly on Tuesdays from April 23- June 12 (8 weeks) between 3.30 - 5.00pm. The last few minutes of class are focused on cleaning our workspace. Make-up lessons are not available. Please read our terms prior to booking. This course is run by Denya Hunt. Denya is a Diploma of Arts Student who runs her own pottery business specialising in colourful and quirky ceramics. She has been leading classes for young makers since 2022.

Easter Bunny Pottery Class

Join us for an Easter themed pottery class and make your own adorable bunny! You will learn how to use the pinch pot method to create your bunny's body, and add on a fluffy tail and ears. Decorate your piece with texture and colour to add cuteness and character. This is an all ages and abilities class. Easter Trinkets and Knick Knacks!

Clay Club (All Ages)

Between Monday 24 April 2023 and Tuesday 19 March 2024
The Clay Club is a casual crafternoon session where you can express your creativity through the medium of clay! Directed at young humans, but all ages (8+) are warmly welcome. Parents and carers are encouraged to book a spot and join in! This is a drop in session (come late, leave early, no worries), no commitments - come once or every week, it is up to you. First timers or experienced makers are catered for. Our facilitator can show you how to build with methods such as pinching, coiling, slab building and sculpting. Participants are provided materials and access to studio tools. All firing is included in your class fee. After your first session your pieces are typically fired within 2 weeks. You can book back in to decorate your pieces with our underglazes. The last few minutes of class are focused on cleaning our tools and workspace. Note - Due to limited space, pottery can only be stored at the studio for up to 6 weeks.

Sgraffito Ceramics Class (with Happy Heart Ceramics)

We are excited to welcome back Rhianon from Happy Heart Ceramics to run this specialised course in surface decoration using the sgraffito method! You may have met Rhianon at markets around Brisbane where she sells her vibrant and exquisitely decorated ceramics. In this 2.5 hour session you will build two smaller/one larger sized piece of your choice using a hump mold to support the making process. You will be guided to select complementary colours from our vibrant selection of high quality underglaze to decorate your piece. Rhianon will then share all her tips and tricks for creating beautiful bespoke patterns by carving through the underglaze ("sgraffito") to expose the white clay underneath. All work will be clear glazed and fired by the studio and available for collection after approximately 3-4 weeks. Only food safe glazes are used. We recommend hand washing your creations. Bobble Heads - Pottery Pet Class

Join local artist and potter Denya to create your own cute little Bobble Head Pottery Pet! A Bobble Head is a two part creature where the head sits on top of a hidden cone, allowing the head to wobble and bobble on top of the body. Denya will guide you to create a pinch pot, join ears, tails or other body parts, then scratch and sculpt your cutie. Participants are also welcome to bring their own imaginative ideas and design their own creation. Coloured underglazes will be provided for you to decorate your piece. Christmas Ornaments and Trinkets (all ages)

Tuesday 12 December 2023
Join us and create your own Christmas theme pottery! In this class we will guide you with the techniques to make a set of Christmas ornaments for your tree, or Christmas trinkets to decorate your home. We will have some inspiration but as always you are free to bring your own ideas - whether it is a snowman, mini Christmas tree, candy cane or even a reindeer! Coloured underglazes are provided for you to decorate your piece during the class. All work will be clear glazed and fired on site and ready for collection around 3-4 weeks after the session. Recommended for people aged 8 and over. Children under 8 may attend with an adult participant. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to join with their young folk!

Pottery Wheel Taster Class for 4 people

Between Friday 13 October 2023 and Friday 1 December 2023
Relax and get muddy with this introduction to "throwing clay" on the pottery wheel! This is a casual session for up to four absolute beginners where you will be welcome to experience the magic of the wheel with some guidance and no pressure. In this 1.5 hour session, participants will: - View a demonstration on how to use a potter's wheel - Learn the skills to centre, open, and pull up clay to form a cylinder or bowl - Throw your own handmade pottery Each participant may choose two of their favourite pieces which our team at Santai Studio will trim, fire, glaze, and refire for you (additional pieces are $30 each). Two glaze colours will be available. Pottery will be ready to collect after around 4 weeks. This is a private session for up to four participants. Please wear old clothes and bring an apron/ small towel for messy hands. Closed in shoes are recommended.

Christmas Ornaments Class

Friday 1 December 2023
Make your own bespoke set of Christmas ornaments! In this two hour session you will be provided with a pre-rolled slab of smooth white clay and a range of cutters to make your shapes (or if you have some special cutters at home, feel free to BYO). We will show you how to neatly cut and smooth your ornaments for a professional finish. You will have the choice of stamping (we have letters and patterns), carving, sgraffito (scratching through glaze to expose the white clay) or painting directly onto your ornaments. You can expect to make around 6 ornaments in this session (depending on time spent decorating), All work will be clear glazed and fired by the studio and available for collection before Christmas. Suitable for people aged 12 and over. Tea/coffee available at the studio. BYO drinks welcome.

Paint a Piece of Handmade Pottery

Friday 17 November 2023
Relax and enjoy some time to get creative by yourself or with friends at our new Paint a Piece Sessions! In this session get to choose the piece you want to glaze - a mug, tumbler, small vase, or five Xmas ornaments! Additional pieces can be purchased to glaze on the evening if desired (payment can be taken by card). All pieces are handmade by professional potters at our studio. A beautiful range of quality underglazes will be provided for you to create your masterpiece. Pieces will be clear glazed for a glossy foodsafe finish. Sessions are facilitated by an underglaze expert who is there to provide suggestions, inspiration and tips on achieving the bets results. Work will be glaze fired by the studio and available for collection after approximately 1-2 weeks. Participants will be notified via email. Suitable for people aged 13 and over. BYO drinks welcome. This is a five week beginner level course and no experience with clay is required. The focus is on making functional cups, mugs, and bowls on the pottery wheel. Use of the studio tools, wheels, clay and glazes is all included. At the end of the course, you should expect to have produced around 6 to 8+ food-safe and dishwasher-safe handmade pieces of functional ceramics. A course curriculum will be provided prior to commencement (or contact us for a copy before you book). Each student has a wheel for their exclusive use during throwing classes. The class meets every Wednesday from 6pm to around 8:15pm (or a bit later) from Nov 8 to Dec 6. Students will be part of a community studio and participate in tidying their tools and space at the end of class. Suitable for persons aged 16 and over. Course cancellations require one week notice. Create a Trinket Dish with Melted Glass!

Wind down after a big week with a Friday evening drink and some clay creativity! Join us for a casual and fun evening of pottery. In this session, you will be guided in hand building techniques to create a vessel or vessels of your choice (dish, bowl, tray). Your pottery can be textured, stamped and decorated with underglazes. In this class you can choose if you would like the studio to fire your pots with glass inside, which will melt and pool, creating a stunning crackle effect! *Please note these pieces are not foodsafe* We encourage you to bring your own ideas, and you are most welcome to build anything you can imagine in this class! But personally we love making little dishes with our creatures in the centre of a molten glass lake! Sgraffito Ceramics Class (with Happy Heart Ceramics)

We are excited to welcome Rhianon from Happy Heart Ceramics to run this specialised course in surface decoration using the sgraffito method! You may have met Rhianon at markets around Brisbane where she sells her vibrant and exquisitely decorated ceramics. In this two hour session you will build a piece of your choice using a hump mold to guide the making process. You will be guided to select complementary colours from our vibrant selection of high quality underglaze to decorate your piece. Rhianon will then share all her tips and tricks for creating beautiful bespoke patterns by carving through the glaze to expose the white clay underneath. All work will be clear glazed and fired by the studio and available for collection after approximately 3-4 weeks. Only food safe glazes are used. We recommend hand washing your creations. Bobble Heads - Pottery Pet Class

Join local artist and potter Denya to create your own cute little Bobble Head Pottery Pet! A Bobble Head is a two part creature where the head sits on top of a hidden cone, allowing the head to wobble and bobble on top of the body. Denya will guide you to create a pinch pot, join ears, tails or other body parts, then scratch and sculpt your cutie. Participants are also welcome to bring their own imaginative ideas and design their own creation. Coloured underglazes will be provided for you to decorate your piece. All work will be clear glazed and fired on site and ready for collection around 3-4 weeks after the class. Recommended for people aged 8 and over. 2 Week Pottery Wheel Crash Course

This is a two week beginner level course and no experience with clay is required. The focus is on making functional vessels on the pottery wheel. Use of the studio tools, wheels, clay and firing is all included. There are two x 2.5 hour sessions - from 18:00 to 20:30 on Sept 19 AND 26. In the first session you will learn centring and throwing techniques. In the second session you will learn to trim, add a handle, add texture and decorate with coloured underglaze. You should expect to produce 2-4 food-safe and dishwasher-safe handmade pieces of functional ceramics. All pottery is clear glazed by the studio and available after approximately four weeks. Intensive Weekend Pottery Wheel Course

Learn to use the pottery wheel in two days! This is a beginner level pottery wheel course led by veteran potter Lindsay Descovich. Classes run from 9.30am til 3pm each day, with a break at midday for lunch. Pottery Glazing Class

Between Thursday 30 March 2023 and Friday 26 May 2023
This session is for participants who have made pottery in one of our classes and would like to return and glaze their work. Participants will be given multiple glazing options and directions in each method. We have a combination of underglazes, standard brushing glazes and studio recipe dipping glazes available for you to select from. The experiences Instructor will explain different techniques and assist you along the way. We encourage you to bring photos of your pottery made in class to identify correct pieces. Participants may like to browse online (e.g. Pinterest, Instagram) for glazing inspiration before class. All glazes used at the studio are lead free and food safe; pottery can be used in the dishwasher and microwave. Please note, the price includes glazing of one participant's pottery from one class. If you have additional pieces, there will be an excess glazing fee of $10/kg. You may get messy, don’t wear your favourite clothes! Suitable for all ages.

Pottery Apprentice Program (8 Week Course)

The Pottery Apprentice Program will train the next generation of pottery fanatics! This is an intensive term-based pottery course where young potters will learn core skills to create using clay. Students will make, glaze and fire a number of functional and sculptural pieces. Techniques will be demonstrated, but there will be plenty of scope for individual ideas and creativity. Specifically, the curriculum includes: • Throwing and trimming pots on a pottery wheel • Hand building with coils, pinch pots and slab • Glazing with underglaze, brush and dipping glaze • Clay carving, sgraffito and tissue transfers • Kiln loading, unloading and firing • Studio safety, maintenance and cleaning up Classes run weekly from April 27- June 15 (8 weeks) between 3.45 - 5.30pm. The last 10-15 minutes of class are focused on cleaning our tools and equipment. Make-up lessons are not available for this program. Trained in Japan, Sam will guide you to create a pot, bowl, vase or other large vessel of your choice in this two hour session. "Underglaze" is available for those who want to decorate their pot during the session. Teeny tiny trinkets (all ages)

Tuesday 14 March 2023
Join talented local artist and potter Denya and learn to sculpt tiny creations. This is a TWO-PART event to make and glaze ceramics, held on March 14 and 28. Ticket price includes BOTH sessions. In session one (Mar 14), you are guided in technique to create tiny clay objects such as oranges, pumpkins, mushrooms, mini bowls and cups. However, you are welcome to come with your own ideas and make whatever mini creations you like! Creations can be stamped and carved in this session. They will be dried and fired before session two. In session two (Mar 28), you will return to glaze and decorate your fired pottery. All work will be fired on site by the Studio Manager, and ready for collection one week after the second class. Please note, while the greatest of care is taken, breakages occasionally occur as part of the high temperature firing process. Recommended for people aged 8 and over. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to join with their young folk.

This session is for an adult and child to participate together. The price is for two tickets. In this two hour introductory session, you will learn the basic techniques to throw pottery on the wheel. Participants will be shown how to centre, open, and pull up clay to form a cylinder. Pots will be bisque fired and can be collected to paint at home, or participants are welcome to return to book into a glazing session as advertised on our Booking Page. Please wear old clothes and bring an apron/ small towel for messy hands. Closed in shoes are recommended. This class is suitable for adults and children aged 8 and over. You are welcome to bring drinks and snacks.

Beginner Pottery Wheel Taster Class

In this two hour introductory session, you will learn the basic techniques to manipulate clay pottery on the wheel. This is a casual session for absolute beginners where you will be welcome to experience the wheel with some guidance and no pressure. Participants will be shown how to centre, open, and pull up clay to form a basic cylinder. You may choose up to four pots from your session to be fired and collected after two weeks. These pots will not be glazed. Participants are welcome to return to book into a glazing session (at least two weeks after their class) as advertised on our Booking Page. Please wear old clothes and bring an apron/ small towel for messy hands. Closed in shoes are recommended. This class is suitable for persons aged 16 and over. 5 Week Pottery Wheel Class

Wednesday 15 February 2023
This is a five week beginner level course and no experience with clay is required. The focus is on making functional cups, mugs, and bowls on the pottery wheel. Use of the studio tools, wheels, clay and glazes is all included. At the end of the course, you should expect to have produced around 6 to 8 food-safe and dishwasher-safe handmade pieces of functional ceramics. A course curriculum will be provided prior to commencement (or contact us for a copy before you book). Each student has a wheel for their exclusive use during throwing classes. The class meets every Wednesday from 6pm to 8:30pm from Feb 15 to March 15. Students will be part of a community studio and participate in tidying their tools and space after class. Suitable for persons aged 16 and over. Course cancellations require one week notice. Make-up sessions cannot be provided for missed classes (although students may join public studio time and glaze classes).

The Pottery Apprentice Program

The Pottery Apprentice Program will train the next generation of pottery fanatics! This is an intensive term-based pottery course where young potters will learn core skills to create using clay. Students will make, glaze and fire a number of functional and sculptural pieces. Techniques will be demonstrated, but there will be plenty of scope for individual ideas and creativity. Specifically, the curriculum includes: • Throwing and trimming pots on a pottery wheel • Hand building with coils, pinch pots and slab • Glazing with underglaze, brush and dipping glaze • Clay carving, sgraffito and tissue transfers • Kiln loading, unloading and firing • Studio safety, maintenance and cleaning up Classes run weekly from Feb 2 til Mar 23 (8 weeks) between 3.45-5.30pm. The last 10-15 minutes of class are focussed on cleaning our tools and equipment. Makeup lessons are not available for this program. Intermediate Wheel Throwing Class

*Important* This class is designed to assist students capable of centering and pulling up walls in a small vessel. Students who have completed our taster course may enrol. In this 2.5 hour session, an experienced potter will work with you to develop and improve your wheel technique. Wheel teacher Karen McDonald (@karemics - Instagram) will guide you to throw in a more controlled manner, make complex and refined forms, and throw consistently. Wedging techniques will be demonstrated. You may bring sketches or examples of forms to replicate. Potters are encouraged to cut and examine their pots and hence, firing of pots is not included. If you wish to take pots home, please bring a suitable container. Wear old clothes and bring an apron/ small towel. Closed in shoes are recommended. We have a combination of underglazes, standard brushing glazes and studio recipe dipping glazes available for you to select from. Make a Japanese inspired Kurinuki tea bowl

In this session you will learn the ancient art of carving out a tea cup from a firm lump of clay. Much like wood carving, the kurinuki technique is a slow, meditative process of revealing a hand made cup or bowl that is perfectly imperfect.
