The South Coast Writers Centre presents THREE DAYS of fun book-related activities for kids in their School Holiday Program at Coledale Community Hall on Monday 12, Tuesday 13 and Thursday 15 April.
Every morning from 9.15am to 9.55am is Story Time: FREE live book readings from local children's authors provided by the Children's Book Council of Australia Illawarra South Coast Sub-branch. Recommended age for the readings is up to 7 years old. Book your older kids into the workshops and get comfy with the little 'uns in Story Time!
WORKSHOPS + ACTIVITIES
MONDAY 12 APRIL
9.15am-9.55am: Story Time

9.30am-11am: Book reEngineering with Imogen Ross
Age group: 8 – 12
Using second-hand reference books (from op shops and libraries) we do the unthinkable! We fold, scrunch, tear and re-work the pages to turn the book into a 3D object that literally has words falling out of it! Young artists, architects and engineers are given assort pencils, textas, glue sticks and rulers to aid them in re-engineering a book into an original work of art. Some artists may simply wish to scribble and draw on the pages, whereas others may be more interested in 3D sculpting. A workshop that breaks all the rules!
12pm-1.30pm: Writing Fantasy with Allison Tait
Age group: 9 – 14
Do you love exciting adventures, strong characters and vivid worlds? Learn the basics of creating fantasy stories with bestselling author A. L. Tait. Dream big! Allison Tait (A.L. Tait) is the internationally published bestselling author of the epic middle-grade adventure series The Mapmaker Chronicles and The Ateban Cipher, and the Maven & Reeve Mysteries.
2pm-3.30pm: Illustrating A Book Cover with Dale Newman
Age group: 9 – 14
This fun, hands-on activity will teach you the process of book cover creation. Starting with a ‘brief’ you’ll get expert tips on what makes a dynamic cover, then develop your own illustration and cover mock up. Materials will be provided but feel free to bring any of your own favourites. Dale is an award-winning illustrator of books for children, including Julie Hunt’s graphic novel, KidGlovz and it’s companion novel, Shoestring - the Boy Who Walks on Air (Allen & Unwin). She loves sharing her skills and encouraging young people to develop their creative vision and abilities.
TUESDAY 13 APRIL

10.30am-12.30pm: The (Very) Fun Side of Writing with Helena Fox
Age group: 10 – 14
Creative writing can sometimes feel like a lot of work, especially if you think it has to be perfect from the very beginning. In this two-hour workshop, we will let go of perfection and muck about with words in a relaxed and playful way. We will invent impossible places and nonsense words, put unusual characters in wild situations, and break some rules! We will focus on the (very) fun side of writing, so that the next time you have to write ‘seriously’, you will remember that creative writing can always start with freedom, curiosity, experimentation and joy. Helena has mentored young writers and adults for over twelve years, running numerous creative workshops privately, in schools, and at the SCWC. Her debut novel, How it Feels to Float, recently won the Prime Minister's Literary Award for Young Adult Fiction.
1pm-2.30pm: Mapping a Story with Sandy Fussell
Age group: 8 – 12
Bring your coloured pencils and some drawing paper! In this workshop, you’ll be mapping a story by drawing a fantasy island map. After that, you’ll work on the story your map magically reveals. Sandy Fussell is the author of fifteen books for children published in Australia, the UK, the US and Asia. Her eight-book Samurai Kids series won an IBBY Outstanding Book for Young People with a Disability award and contains multiple CBCA Notables. Her novel Polar Boy was shortlisted for CBCA Australian Younger Readers Book of the Year, and her picture book Sad, the Dog was reviewed and listed in The Best Picture Books of the Year in the New York Times.
THURSDAY 15 APRIL

10.30am-12pm: Collective Cartoon Graphic Zine with Imogen Ross
Age group: 10 – 14
A fun freestyle collage activity that encourages participants to create a collective Graphic Zine using magazines, newspapers, scrap papers and newspapers. Each participant works on designing 1-2 pages of graphic art (in response to either a theme, a poem or word associations that stimulate imagination). Imogen can then make small printed booklets up from everyone's page designs and print them out/email the participants the digital version after the workshop.
